The Acadia Students’ Union Extended Health Plan is offered as a not for profit service to its members. It is based upon the premise that all full time students at Acadia University require health coverage. This premise was established in February 1997, when students voted in a referendum supporting the introduction of an extended health care program that would supplement, but not replace, the provincial health care plan. The ASU believes that the health plan provides affordable health insurance designed especially for students on fixed incomes.
The Health Plan fee is automatically applied to student fees. The coverage period is September 1, 2009-August 31, 2010. Canadian students must be full-time in order to be eligible.
Please Note: Every September 1st is the beginning of a new school year, and the beginning of a new health plan coverage period.
THE OPT OUT PROCESS
Students who wish to be removed from the ASU Health Plan must visit the Health Plan Office (located in Room 610, Old SUB) and provide proof to the Health Plan Administrator that they are enrolled in another plan. This proof can include the actual insurance card, photocopy of the card, a copy of the policy, or a letter from the Insurance Company. All information must have the insurance company name and policy number.
All documentation must be received and the waiver form signed by the student and Health Plan Administrator by the opt out deadline of September 30th.
Informing Student Accounts of your coverage WILL NOT remove you from the ASU Health Plan. You must visit the Health Plan Office in person. Both the student and the Health Plan Administrator must sign the waiver. This process must be completed annually.
2009/2010 Fees
Please note: Insurance premiums are subject to change.
*Students who wish to be on the family plan must visit the Health Plan Office and give the names and birth dates of the dependant(s) they want covered under their plan. This must be completed by September 30th.

Please Note: In the event of any discrepancy between the information herein and the contracts between The Trustees of The Campus Trust and the Insurance Companies, the terms of the contracts will apply. Students MUST opt out of this Plan that they attend Acadia University.
This plan supplements your provincial health plan, it does not replace it. You must have coverage with a provincial health plan in order to be an eligible member of this plan. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure his/her provincial coverage is in place. Students traveling to Nova Scotia from a different province are advised to contact their home province to obtain Extended Provincial Coverage to Nova Scotia while attending Acadia University.
Non-Resident Canadians
Canadian students who were not residing in Canada when they applied to Acadia are identified as “non-residents”. It is possible that some of these students have no provincial health insurance. Therefore, they must be placed on the International Plan until they become eligible for provincial coverage.
Students who become eligible for a provincial health card must visit the Health Plan Office (Room 610, Old SUB) and show the Health Plan Administrator the provincial card in order to be switched to the Canadian Plan.

International students pay a higher health insurance fee than students on the Canadian plan because their coverage is not supplemented by a provincial health plan. If at any point during their period of study they qualify for a provincial health card, they can contact the Health Plan Administrator and ask to be switched to the Canadian plan.Their health insurance fees will be adjusted to the lower Canadian monthly fee for any subsequent months.
