Acadia Grad Students' AssociationThe Acadia Graduate Students’ Association (AGSA) is an Internal Organization committed to advocating for graduate student concerns at Acadia. AGSA is comprised of a 5 member executive, departmental representatives, and representatives that serve on various graduate studies-related committees. AGSA also serves the graduate students at Acadia by striving to aid in the provision of a positive recreational and academic environment. High turnover of graduate students due to program completion leaves AGSA in the hands of each successive graduate student body. With the support of the ASU, the AGSA Executive and council is free to determine the year’s focus and activities. Past AGSA activities have included ratification of a constitution, Thanksgiving and Hallowe’en socials, participation in the Graduate Student Leadership Conference, and provision of travel grants, and active participation on the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and other representative committees. Acadia PrideAcadia Pride is an ASU Internal Organization aimed at providing an outlet for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirited, and queer (LGBT2IQ) individuals, as well as their family, friends, and allies. The group provides support for students, staff, and faculty dealing with issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Pride also aims to build a community within Acadia University, and promote its many goals including creating awareness of issues surrounding sexual orientation and promoting an open and safe atmosphere at Acadia University by breaking down the walls of homophobia and heterosexism. Although the group has a supportive component, it also has both activist and social aspects as well. Throughout the year members have the opportunity to discuss and learn about new topics and take part in a variety of social activities. Weekly meetings are held where a variety of current issues are discussed. The meetings offer a safe space for Acadia students, staff and faculty to express themselves and to interact with their peers. Various social and awareness-related activities are also planned during these meetings. In the past, members of Acadia Pride have worked together to carry out Glitz & Glam (a Pride party like Acadia had never witnessed), Humanity Against Homophobia (a candlelight vigil in memory of those who succumbed to acts of homophobia, aimed at preventing future homophobic acts), Pink Triangle Day (February 14th, another important day to fight against homophobia), as well as Queer Identities Week (a week dedicated to promoting equity on campus). Acadia Pride will continue with these and new initiatives to build the social profile of the LGBT2IQ community and raise awareness of related issues. All are welcome to attend weekly meetings, or any of the many events held across campus. Contact: Coordinator: Kaden Mosley Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. AthenaeumThe Athenaeum has served as Acadia’s official student newspaper since 1874. With both a weekly paper circulation and a new website with more online content than ever, it remains the most efficient and effective means of communicating local news and student issues to the student body. The Athenaeum is also a member of the Canadian University Press (CUP) and adheres to the Charter of Rights and Responsibilities of the CUP. The Athenaeum is created by, and for, members of the Acadia community. The paper strives to provide fair and unbiased commentary on major issues and events in and around the Acadia campus. While many resources are allocated to the coverage of university news and events, notable space is devoted to the coverage of happenings in the Town of Wolfville. This ensures that The Athenaeum remains a strong asset to Acadia students and Wolfville residents alike. The Athenaeum seeks to provide its readers with a content-diverse product. Therefore, submissions from students and members of the local community are encouraged. For more information on how to get involved, contact Editor-in-Chief Tim Hansen. The Athenaeum reserves the right to edit or refuse material submitted for publication. The Athenaeum is an Internal Organization of the Acadia Students’ Union (ASU). Although the paper relies heavily on ASU funding, The Athenaeum is open to advertising inquiries from all forms of advertisers. Options range from full-page advertisements to online banners. For more information, or to request an advertising package, contact Editor-in-Chief Tim Hansen. The offices of The Athenaeum are located on the second floor of the Students’ Union Building (SUB). All are welcome to attend the weekly meetings, and are encouraged to get involved with this great publication that has served Acadia and Wolfville for over 135 years. Meal ExchangeFormerly just one area of Volunteer Acadia, Meal Exchange was established as its own Internal Organization at Acadia when the events became too popular and the job became too big! Meal exchange plans its own events to raise awareness and funds for various hunger-related charities and causes that students are encouraged to support. Meal Exchange is the local representation of a national charity that focuses on local hunger through such well-known events as Trick-or-Eat and Skip-a-Meal. With the growing enthusiasm of students for volunteering, Meal Exchange is helping to directly impact some of the hunger problems in Nova Scotia. The Meal Exchange Coordinators exchange information across the country in order for everyone to find new ways to fight back against hunger in local communities across Canada. New volunteers and ideas are always welcome! Contact: Coordinator: Cassondra McCrory Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Volunteer AcadiaThis academic year, Volunteer Acadia will celebrate the 15th anniversary of its creation as an Internal Organization of the Acadia Students’ Union. Volunteer Acadia promotes volunteerism by acting as a link between Acadia students looking to become involved and organizations seeking assistance. Volunteer Acadia is located in the Students’ Union Building (SUB), inside the Resource Centre (the same area as Acadia Pride and the Acadia Women’s Centre). The office holds regular office hours Monday through Friday and appointments can be made. Volunteer Acadia finds opportunities that suit the individual interests of each volunteer, and provides information about volunteering with other national and international organizations that extend further than the Wolfville community. Volunteer Acadia has also raised money for the Nova Scotia Youth HelpLine, the Stephen Lewis Foundations (for AIDS research), for Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia, the Victory over Violence Teen Shelter in Kentville, and is heavily involved with Acadia’s annual campaign for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Shinerama. We also organize Random Acts of Kindness (or RAK) on campus and in the greater Wolfville community. If you want to get involved, come check us out! Women's CentreHello and welcome to the Women’s Centre at Acadia! The Acadia Women’s Centre is a place where women can come and build new friendships as well as learn more about many different women’s issues from other Acadia students, many of whom share the same concerns. The Women’s Centre brings together women AND men of both the Acadia and Wolfville communities to support women and women’s issues. The Women’s Centre is a feminist organization run under the principals of support, inclusion, and respect of differences. The office and staff provide a wealth of resources about women’s issues on campus as well as in the broader community. Past initiatives of the Women’s Centre have included: pink ribbon campaign, healthy eating cookbooks, international performance artists, an all female coffee haus, a candlelight vigil to mark the December 6th Montreal Massacre, and of course one of our most exciting and successful initiatives – the student production of the Vagina Monologues. This year the Women’s Centre will be continuing with these initiatives, as well as introducing new events and promotions. The Centre is a positive space where women can come for support, guidance, or a friendly face. Our office is available to anyone wishing to access any of these services or just come to chat. The Women’s Centre holds weekly meetings as well as coordinates an e-mail distribution list which informs community members of what is happening at the Centre as well as what they can do to help.
